Every woman will experience menopause, which is defined as the final menstrual period. Menopause is generally confirmed when twelve consecutive months have passed without a period. In some cases menopause does not come as a completely natural phase of life, but has been induced by hysterectomy, other surgery or disease.
During the time leading up to cessation of menstrual periods (perimenopause) a woman’s cycle may become more frequent, less frequent, heavier or lighter. She may also have to deal with hot flashes and/or night sweats. It is believed that the part of the brain called the hypothalamus undergoes changes at that time, and since it is responsible for regulating body temperature it follows that discomfort can be experienced.
Difficulty sleeping is sometimes a problem, but it isn’t clear if the difficulty arises because of interrupted sleep patterns caused by night sweats. That may also be the underlying cause of the irritability many women experience.
The change in hormonal level can affect hair growth, either causing more to grow in undesirable places, or causing hair loss. Skin can be affected by the lower level of estrogen by becoming saggy because of loss of collagen and thickness. The balance between the hormones estrogen and androgen may also lead to acne, especially in women who had it as a young person. The lack of estrogen can also cause thinning of urethra lining, leading to urine leakage. Also, lower estrogen causes the urethra to become shorter, allowing a greater chance of urinary tract infection. Weight gain, heart palpitations, changes in eye health/vision and joint pain may also be attributed to change in hormone levels, but could also be part of the aging process or indication of a more serious condition. Other symptoms not listed here are also experienced by some. Of course, health care professionals should be seen on a regular basis to help determine which symptoms need further investigation.
