Is Year Round Sun Protection Really Necessary?

According to the Mayo Clinic – Yes!  They say that good skin care – including sun protection and gentle cleansing – can keep your skin healthy and glowing for years to come.

The Number 1 thing you can do to keep your skin healthy is protect it from the sun year round!  But, how do you do that?  Here are some skin care tips:

Use Sunscreen
Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 year round.  If you’re outdoors for an extended timeframe, reapply often.

Seek Shade
Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the rays are strongest.

Retin-A or Retinol Products
If you’re using Retin-A or Retinol products, use only at night.  With any kind of exfoliating treatment, make sure your UVA and UVB protection is adequate during the day.  Exfoliation strips layers of your stratum comeum, the top layer of which is your environmental protection barrier.

Supplements
Topical supplements, like l-ascorbic acid, are a good addition to your anti-aging cream.  Mix a bit of fresh, powdered Vitamin C into your anti-aging treatment each night – it not only quenches free radicals, it builds collagen.

Diet
Healthy skin diets are high in EFA’s and antioxidants.  Some musts are fish or other Omega-3 rich oil, vitamin C, vitamin D3.

Wear Protective Clothing
Get in the habit of wearing hats for protection against UVA exposure.  I especially endorse this one, as I recently had a skin cancer removed from the top of my head – it wasn’t malignant but enough to scare a person!
