Protect Your Skin During the Cold, Dry Months of Winter

youthful healthy beautiful skinJust because the cold months of winter are upon us does not mean that sun damage should be any less of a concern.  Harmful rays are still potent even during a darker, cooler climate.  The sun can even be more damaging due to the reflection off the snow and ice.  Combined with the drying effects of cool air and forced heat, we have to treat our skin with an extra dose of kindness this time of year.

Our expert contributor and board certified dermatologist, Tanya Kormeili, provides us with the following skin care tips, reminding us of the importance of using products containing UV protection, even during winter.

Most people don’t realize that it is the UV radiation and not the “sun” that causes damage. This means that even on a cloudy day there are UV rays that are affecting the skin. The skin is our immune system. It is responsible for our thermal regulation. It is our largest organ. We need to protect it from radiation everyday! So, get your make-up and SPF in one. There are formulations (Elta MD or Intellishade) that combine both. Great foundation and great protection. Quick and effective. Put on a mineral bronzer to look a bit more tanned. Also, remember, the fall and winter are the perfect time for all the lasers and chemical peels that clear the skin tone, even out the complextion and need you to stay “out of the sun!”
