Herbal Skin Care

Natural HerbsIn the days of past, herbs were the only natural skin care products available. Then, synthetic products came on the market and herbal skin care was forgotten.

Today, herbs are in vogue again but some of the commercial versions have drawbacks. Often, they’re not really herbal at all but just add scents or a little splash of essential oils to make them appear herbal. The true herbal ones are often available in specialty stores and can be very expensive.

Benefits of Herbal Skin Care Products

  1. They are very effective in treating sensitive skin
  2. Herbal products can help eliminate skin problems and eliminate the chance of reoccurrence
  3. Some herbs are so pure that they can also be eaten

Herbal Skin Care Recipes

Herbal Skin Scrub

  • 1 part rolled oats
  • 1 part dried lavender
  • 1 part dried rose petals
  • 1 part cornmeal
  • 1 part sea salt
  • 2 parts facial clay
  • Rosemary essential oil, warm water or aloe vera juice/extract

Pulverize the oats, lavender, and rose petals in a food processor. Mix all dry ingredients together and keep them in an airtight jar.

To use: take a small spoonful of the dry ingredients in the palm of your hand, add a drop of rosemary essential oil and mix paste with either warm water or aloe vera juice/extract. Wet your face with warm water and gently scrub your skin with the paste in a circular motion with your fingertips; leave on for a few minutes, then rise with warm water.

Herbal Toner

Witch hazel is cheap and effective as a toner. Hydrosols (rosewater or orange blossom water) are also great toners. You can buy them or make your own. Simply steep the plant materials in hot water overnight, then strain. Good hydrosols include cucumber, lavender, rosemary, chamomile, and rose. Use one part plant material (if plants are fresh) to one part water or one part plant material (if dried) to two parts water. Green tea is also a great toner –just brew it strong and let it cool.

Herbal Moisturizer

If you have dry skin, unrefined coconut oil is great; otherwise, try aloe vera. Freshly extracted aloe vera is a natural hydrant that helps in soothing skin.

Herbs For Skin Support

Ingesting herbs internally will also help nourish and care for your skin; liver tonics especially. Milk thistle, dandelion root, yellow dock root, and bur-dock root are particularly good for the liver and will help support your skin in the process. Drinking green tea will also help your skin.

Lifestyle Recommendations

By far, the best thing you can do to have beautiful skin is to get enough sleep. Exercise is also important—a good daily walk is great. Eat well, avoiding white sugar, corn syrup, and flour. Drinking water will help your body eliminate toxins. And de-stress your life as best you can.
