Easy Homemade Facial Recipes
Along with snow and ice, the winter months bring dry, chapped skin. Keep your skin smooth and elastic by trying one (or both) of these homemade facial recipes. Many natural ingredients contain the same healing properties as the expensive beauty and skin care products found in stores.
Using a simple face mask, like one of these from our panel of experts, can be a fun and nourishing treat on any cold, winter evening.
During the winter months when skin gets dry, I love to do this mask with my daughter. We leave it on for about 10 minutes.
Carrot Honey Nourishing Mask
1/3 cup carrot juice
the pulp of half an orange
1 tsp honey
Mix the ingredients together well. If it feels too watery you can add a teaspoon of flour. Brush it onto your face. Leave on for 5 minutes and rinse with warm water.
Carrots are an excellent source of Retinol (vitamin A), a molecule that penetrates the skin and stimulates the production of elastin and collagen. This will result in smoother, more elastic skin.
Simple Face Mask: Sour Cream Facial
- Bring about one tablespoon of sour cream to room temperature.
- Spread with a small size rubber spatula over face and neck. I like to do my hands too.
- Relax with a book or simply lay down and rest. (I wait just a few minutes for my hands to dry a little before I try to do anything, otherwise it gets everything covered with sour cream!)
- Leave on 30 to 50 minutes, or until dry and tight. Then wash off and apply your best natural moisturizer.
You can reap the benefits of using lactic acid, an ingredient found in many beauty and skincare products, by using sour cream in your own homemade treatments. Besides containing lactic acid, as all fermented milk products do, sour cream acts as a natural exfoliator and boosts the production of the connective tissue that supports the skin, collagen.
