9 Recession-friendly Tips for Skincare

Beauty TipsHave you checked out the prices on the products in the beauty aisle lately? Forget the department store brands, even the store brands at my local drug store seemed to be creeping well above $10 a bottle.

Aren’t we in a recession? Who can afford this stuff?


Well – I don’t believe that beauty has to cost that much – that’s why I asked skincare experts to share their tips for staying beautiful without spending a lot of money.

Aesthetician Andrea DeSimone shared these 9 tips for keeping your skin beautiful without breaking the bank:

1 – Get solid sleep – Rested skin is happy skin.

2 – Hydrated skin is healthy skin. Drink lots of H2O – Invest in a Brita and drink 1 pitcher a day, refilling it at night. Think of all of the money you will save by not buying bottle after bottle of water plus your skin will thank you

3 – Make your own face mask with banana, oatmeal and yogurt. This recipe is great for all skin types! The saturated fat in the yogurt is great for hydration, as is the banana, and it has a very gentle enzymatic exfoliation. The granulation of the oatmeal works as a gentle exfoliator.Mash 1 ripe banana. Mix thoroughly with 1 tablespoon almond meal or oatmeal. Add in 2 tablespoons plain high fat yogurt. Spread onto face and neck. Allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes then remove with warm water.

4 – Finish up or throw away your collection of products! You probably have accumulated numerous cleansers, toners, moisturizers, etc. Throw away anything more than a year old and salvage the unused. You will then be able to see what you really need, if anything. Most likely, you will have a whole new facial regime.

5 – Use washcloths to buff skin for gentle exfoliation instead of buying expensive buffers.

6 – When there is no moisture in the air, use a humidifier to keep your skin and sinuses hydrated.

7 – The Ayruvedic practice of self massage is used to increase circulation and hydrate the skin. Practice this at home – raid your kitchen cabinet for the olive oil, then massage your body and hair before getting into the shower. Apply evenly and briskly to stimulate circulation. Wash as usual.

8 – Create a homemade, gentle body scrub for all over exfoliation:Saturate finely granulated Epson salts with sweet almond oil. Scrub it up then rinse!

9 – De-puff those eyes – Peel refrigerated cucumbers and slice them thinly. Place slices on eyes, lay back and relax. Replace slices when they loose their chill.
