How Can a Dentist Improve My Smile?

From subtle changes to major repairs, many dentists are prepared to perform a wide variety of procedures to improve your smile. There are many techniques and options to treat teeth that are discolored, chipped, misshapen or missing. A dentist can reshape your teeth, close spaces, restore worn or short teeth, alter the length of your teeth, or even add new “teeth” utilizing implants. Common procedures include bleaching (whitening), bonding, crowns, veneers, reshaping and contouring. Dentists are trained for these basic procedures in dental school and then continue their education after graduating to hone their skills to provide excellent care for their patients.

Don’t Let Your Smile Get Rough Around the Edges

Flattened or jagged teeth age your smile. Speak with a general dentist trained in cosmetic dental procedures to re-contour your teeth’s worn and uneven edges for a more youthful, attractive smile. Once you smooth out those edges, you’ll feel more comfortable smiling for the camera!

Straight, White, and Fabulous Smiles

1.  One key is to use a soft brush and one of the whitening toothpastes. The soft brush protects the gum tissue. If the brush bristles are too firm the gum tissue could be lost in certain areas which would expose darker root suraces.

2.  The use of a disinfectant rinse(such as Closys) helps to decrease plaque accumulation. The plaque attracts stain and damages the tooth structure and gum tissue.

3.  An esthetic way to initiate minor tooth movement is with the Invisalign process. Essentialy, firm trays(similar to small night guards) are worn and direct the tooth movement.

4.  The most conservative way to get rid of small imperfections, decay, etc… is to use resin bonding. The dentist basically adds different layers of tooth colored resin to the teeth and uses a special light to harden the resin. The new restorations can then be sculpted to suit the patient

5.  Prepless porcelain veneers(such as Durathins) are also a great option to restore, change color or contour of the teeth without altering(“drilling” the teeth)
