Are Tummy Tucks and Liposuction Interchangeable?

A popular myth is circulating that a tummy tuck and liposuction are interchangeable. The experts tell us, no! They are not. What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

Find out from these board certified plastic surgeons the difference between these two proceedures and their results while determining which is the right choice for you.

Liposuction is used to remove fat when the skin tone is satisfactory and there is no redundant or excess skin. A Tummy Tuck is performed when there is excess skin and which is usually also associated with a weakening or separation of the abdominal muscles. The skin often has a lot of stretch marks. The degeneration of the skin is usually due to increased weight loss and/ or pregnancy. The Tummy Tuck will restore a flattened and much more attractive abdomen.

Although there are rare exceptions, most women over 35 who have had children have issues such as loose skin – which liposuction can make worse and does not remove it. Also, a separation between the muscles of the abdomen occurs due to the fact that the development of the baby permanently stretches these tissues. Liposuction does nothing to correct this situation which must be addressed with a tummy tuck. If this issue is not corrected, women will still have significant “pooching” of their tummies.
