Is Weight Loss Connected to Hormone Imbalance?
A study shows that the hormone Leptin, which is naturally produced by fat cells, may be somewhat responsible for the return of the weight after a weight-loss program. Leptin plays an important role in regulating the appetite by triggering production of a substance in the hypothalamus that controls hunger and metabolism. After a weight loss, the body mistakenly reacts to the decreased levels of Leptin by gaining back the body fat that has been shed in order to make up for the perceived deficiency.
Researchers discovered that people who had lost weight and then were given injections of leptin, restoring the leptin to pre-weight loss levels, were more able to maintain the weight loss than people who were not given additional leptin.
