Food Secrets for Beautiful Skin - Teriyaki Pork Chops with Blueberry-Ginger Relish
  1. To Marinate: Place pork chops in a large sealable plastic bag. Whisk soy sauce, sherry, garlic, brown sugar, and crushed red pepper in a small bowl.  Add the marinade to the bag, seal, and turn to coat.  Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  2. To Prepare Relish:  About 20 minutes before grilling the pork, combine blueberries, shallot, chile, cilantro, lime juice, ginger, and salt in a small bowl.
  3. Preheat grill to high.  Remove the pork chops from the marinade (discard marinade).  Grill the chops 3-5 minutes per side.  Let them rest for 5 minutes before serving with the relish.

Tip: Marinate the pork (Step1) for up to 1 day.

Ingredient Note: The “cooking sherry” sold in many supermarkets can be surprisingly high in sodium.  We prefer dry sherry, sold with other fortified wines in your wine or liquor store.

"The Hollywood Corner" - Gwyneth Paltrow!

Heal Acne Red Spots Faster - Gwyneth Paltrow’s skin guru, Sonya Dakur, recommends getting more zinc (found in meats, beans, and milk), Vitamin C (found in citrus fruit) and flaxseed oil (found in health food stores, and can be drizzled over your salad). Zinc and vitamin C are protective and strengthen the skin. The flaxseed oil will thin the blood in your skin a bit so your pores are less likely to clog. The three work together to help your skin heal more quickly, so that when you get acne it won’t take as long for the red spots to fade away. She also recommends getting these in the food form over the pill form and her best celebrity skin secret is drink plenty of water to keep skin from looking dry and tired.

What Type of Hair Do You Have?

Just as the type of skin you have requires different care, the type of hair you have also requires special care.  There are 4 types of hair – processed, curly, wavy, and straight.  We will dedicate one month to each hair type.  This month we will talk about  Curly Hair.

Characteristics – Curly hair is nearly always dry hair.  This, combined with the fact that light reflects better from straight surfaces than from curved ones, means that girls with curls often long for the sleek, shiny hair that they fell they will never have.

Curls also have a tendency to tangle and this can result in breaking and splitting.  As your hair is already quite fragile, a considerable amount of TLC is crucial if you want to keep this type of hair in the best condition possible.

All of this, however, pales in comparison with the ultimate trauma for curly-haired girls – the dreaded frizz.  All it needs is a tiny bit of moisture in the air for your sleek curls to turn into tangled webs.  But you don’t need to suffer in silence.

Caring For Curly Hair – This may shock you.  If you have curly hair, never, ever, ever wash it every day.  It tends to dehydrate the hair and make it more frizzy and unmanageable.  Instead, let your hair pick-up some natural oils to help keep it calm and under control.

If you have to wash it to feel cleans, skip shampoo and just rinse with water, then apply conditioner.  When you wash, technique is crucial – use moisturizing shampoos and leave-in conditioners to add hydrating ingredients.  For the best results, comb through with a wide-toothed comb (the only way you should comb curly hair).  Twice-a-month, use an intensive conditioner or hot oil treatment (or try the treatment below).  When drying, don’t’ rub your hair with the towel.  Instead squeeze the excess water into the towel.  Apply an anti-frizz styling cream or serum to the hair while it’s still wet and leave it to dry naturally, or at least use a dryer with a diffuser and only moderate heat.  And, never tip the head upside down (you’re asking for frizz).

Tips For Curly Hair

Hair Treatment – For a rich moisturizing mask that will ad gloss and sheen to curly hair, combine the following ingredients:

½ Cup Olive Oil
10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Place the olive oil in a small saucepan and warm it gently (not hot, just heated).  Remove form the heat and add the lavender oil.  Once you’ve double-checked the temperature, apply the mixture to your hair.  Wrap it in a towel to maximize oil penetration and relax for twenty minutes.  Wash out the oil with a gentle shampoo (you may need to repeat 2 or 3 times) and condition well.

Next month we will talk about Wavy Hair!

34 Menopause Symptoms

In our ongoing endeavor to cover each of the 34 Menopause Symptoms (one every month) – this month’s subject is Irregular Periods.

Most women will probably suffer irregular periods at some point in their lifetime.  A woman’s life can be significantly disturbed by irregular periods, and the problem can worsen if not given the necessary attention.

What Are Irregular Periods?  Periods can vary from 23-35 days but you are considered regular if your periods occur at roughly the same date every month.  At a certain age, the frequency between periods starts fluctuating considerably, making them extremely difficult or even impossible to track.

Irregular periods are also known as anovulatory periods.  This means that women do not properly develop and release a mature egg every month as they normally should.  Because all women respond differently, irregular periods can occur in different forms – irregular periods that affect frequency of menstruation, irregular periods that produce pain during menstruation, and irregular periods that affect quantity of menstruation.

What Causes Irregular Periods?  The cause of irregular periods can be divided into psychological and physical.  Psychological are not as common as physical causes; in fact, it’s normally accepted that physical causes are responsible for irregular periods in most women.

Psychological causes of irregular periods are anxiety and other forms of emotions daily stress, overwork, and fatigue.  If these factors are not controlled, they can destabilize you emotionally, thus, affecting the balance of your bodily functions and initiating changes that will lead to irregular period.

Physical cause of irregular periods – Hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, have a definite effect on your menstruation since they regular the ovulation during the menstrual cycle.  Without a balanced level of these hormones in their bodies, women are unable to properly ovulate, resulting in abnormal menstruation that will lead to irregular periods.  This is why maintaining healthy hormone levels is important to avoid and control irregular periods.

What To Do About Irregular Periods?  The first step is to determine whether your problem is physiological or physical.

Psychological – Irregular periods cause by anxiety, stress, overwork, and fatigue should be treated by scheduling rest, joy time, and integrating an exercise program in your daily routine.  Keep in mind that in most cases a combination of psychological and physical treatments is the best option.

Physical – Because irregular periods are probably caused by imbalanced hormonal levels, maintaining healthy amounts of hormones is a must.  There are several ways to manage irregular periods but the best way is by combining therapies such as “lifestyle approaches” and alternative medicine.
