Halle Berry's Beauty Secrets - You Can Get That Look Too!

There’s no question – Halle Berry has that gorgeous Hollywood glamour look!  Her makeup expert, Tyrone Traylor, tells us how you too can also get that look.

  1. Foundation – Use a ‘spotlight’ technique, which means use one shade lighter than your regular color and dot the makeup down the middle of your face (from just above the brows to just below the lips).  Apply a sheer coat of this same color to your eyelids and under-eye area.  If needed, lightly apply your regular color to the rest of the face.  Only use a light dusting of powder if you have very oily skin.

  2. Eyebrows – Brows should be well defined and not too narrow.  Use a brow pencil close to your natural hair color and draw a few feathery strokes to fill out the brow.  Blend the color using an eyebrow brush, which will soften and evenly distribute the color.

  3. EyeShadow – Using an eyeshadow brush, apply smoky grey from the lash line to the crease and blend well.  Use a white eye pencil to line the inner rim of the lower lashes to brighten the eyes.  Using a black eye pencil, draw a fine line along the outside edge of the lower lash line.  Use a brush to slightly smudge the color for a soft, smoky look.  Finish by curling the lashes and applying two coats of lengthening mascara on top and bottom lashes.

  4. Blush – Using a warm rose powder blush, apply to the cheeks at the top of the ear and drag forward, stopping at the middle of the apple of the cheek (focus color slightly under the cheekbone instead of on the apple).

  5. Lips – Apply a high-shine gloss in a golden brown shade using a lip brush.  Follow with a liner slightly darker than your lip color and line the entire lip.  Use your brush to blend the liner color up and into the center of your lips.

What Your Nails Can Reveal About Your Health

Are your nails strong and healthy looking or do they have ridges and/or areas of unusual color or shape?  The condition of your nails can often give you insight as to your general health as illness can cause changes in your nails.  If you see any of these, bring them to your doctor’s attention.

  1. Indentations that run across your nail can occur when growth at the nail root is disturbed by illness such as heart attack, measles, or pneumonia.

  2. If your fingertips widen and become round while the nails curve around your fingertips, this can be caused by enlargement in connective tissue as compensation for a chronic lack of oxygen.  This is called Clubbing – lung disease is present in 80% of people who have clubbed fingers.

  3. An arc of brownish discoloration may appear in a small percentage of people who have a kidney disorder.

  4. If your nail separates from the nail bed, this generally is associated with physical injury (trauma), psoriasis, drug reactions, fungal disease, or contact dermatitis from using nail hardeners.  It can sometimes also be related to an over- or under-active thyroid gland, iron deficiency, or syphilis.

  5. Soft nails that look “scooped out” where the depression is large enough to hold a drop of liquid, often indicates iron deficiency.

  6. If your nail looks opaque and white but the nail tip has a dark pink to brown band, this can be a symptom of cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, adult-onset diabetes, cancer, or aging.

Remember – the nail conditions described above are not definitive proof of a health problem.  If you have any of the above conditions, please consult your doctor.

Perimenopause - How Can You Tell!

Perimenopause is a stage of a woman’s reproductive life that begins several years before menopause, usually in your 40’s.  During this timeframe, your ovaries gradually begin to produce less estrogen.  It lasts until you enter menopause, which is the point where the ovaries stop releasing eggs.

Perimenopause usually lasts 4 years, however, every woman is different. Some women only experience it for a couple months, some for as much as 10 years.  Perimenopause ends the first year after menopause (when you go 12 months without a period).

You will know you are transitioning into perimenopause when you experience some or all of the following symptoms: Hot flashes, breast tenderness, worsening of PMS, decreased libido, fatigue, irregular periods, vaginal dryness, urine leakage when coughing or sneezing, mood swings, difficulty sleeping.

A couple common questions are:

  1. Can I get pregnant if I am in Perimenopause? The answer is, Yes! You can still get pregnant until you have gone 12 months without a period.

  2. What can I do to alleviate the hot flashes? Some women get relief from taking birth control pills but this is something to talk to your doctor about. A natural progesterone cream is another excellent option.

  3. What else can I do to reduce the symptoms of perimenopause? Exercise, stop smoking, get plenty of sleep, reduce alcohol intake, get to a healthy weight and stay there, take a multivitamin, make sure to get enough calcium (take a supplement if needed), drink 8 glasses of water per day.
