MENOPAUSE INFORMATION

A woman’s menopause can occur at any point between her 30’s and her 60’s.  Some people call it adolescence in reverse – a rocky time of fluctuating hormones and emotions.  Sometimes women have symptoms for 10-15 years before stopping their periods.  Hot spells are caused by hormonal imbalances and changes – not necessarily estrogen loss; they are also related to diet, lifestyle, and generic factors. 

Most women’s menopause symptoms diminish over 2-5 years, although for some it may take more than 10.  And there are things you can do to help!  Adjusting diet, exercise, and sleep patterns does work.  Taking a good multivitamin with some herbs and oils can do wonders.  Looking at your family patterns and relationships is also quite helpful.

What is quite obvious, however, is that the symptoms of women who are under a tremendous amount of stress, eating poorly, and getting inadequate exercise are often much more severe.  It is very important to understand that what may be true for one woman in terms of menopausal symptoms, is not necessarily true for another.

Cutting back on carbohydrates, using no refined sugars in particular, decreasing caffeine and alcohol intake, and increasing exercise in the form of aerobic exercise as well as a weight-training program, all help with the symptoms of menopause.

Women tend to do extremely well if we add some natural progesterone, derived form the wild yam plant.  This is a topical cream generally applied by people having menses on days 14-28 of their cycle.  If a woman is no longer having menses, use is recommended either for three weeks on and one week off, or two weeks on and two weeks off, whichever is more comfortable.  If this is used on a regular basis, most women find that their menses are no longer quite as irregular, and their bleeding certainly will decrease.
