Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Dangerous?

When a woman’s reproductive system begins to shut down she is experiencing perimenopause. At this time the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone fluctuate wildly, oftentimes leading to a wide range of unpleasant symptoms. When she has gone 12 months without a menstrual flow she is experiencing postmenopause. The use of a blood test to measure FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is helpful in women whose uterus has been removed or damaged (because there is no variation in menstrual flow to indicate that something is happening with her hormones). FSH is generally very high in post-menopausal women.
Sometimes a woman is prescribed hormones (estrogen, progestin and possibly testosterone) to help her get through the symptoms she is having: hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, vaginal dryness and itching, urinary incontinence, osteoporosis, irritability/fatigue, and depression, to name a few. The hormones can be delivered by means of pills, patches, creams/gels, IUDs or injections, as well as other methods. The hormones will be prescribed in certain combinations, as determined by the doctor.
In recent studies it has been determined by some that the risks of long term use (more than 5 years) of Hormone Replacement Therapy often outweighs the benefits. Some of the most dangerous risks are blood clots in the veins, movement of clots to the lungs or brain, increased risk of breast cancer, heart attack, dementia, asthma, gallbladder disease, and endometriosis.
