Exercise Eases Menopause
Bypass the unpleasant symptoms of menopause without hormone therapy: A 3-year German study of 78 early postmenopausal women found that those who did an hour of aerobic and strength-training exercises 4 days a week had fewer migraines, mood swings, and bouts with insomnia than their sedentary peers. They also maintained bone mass, lost 2 percent body fat and an inch off their waists, and reduced cholesterol by 5 percent.
Nonexercisers saw these numbers go up, while losing up to 8 percent of their bone mass.
Exercise compensates nicely for declining levels of estrogen, says study author Wolfgang Kemmler, PhD. Both help maintain muscle, bone, and metabolism.
