All women will experience menopause, the end of monthly menstrual periods. Some of these women will experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms, including periods of intense body heat – hot flashes. If the hot flash occurs at night and causes her to perspire it is called ‘night sweats’. Many also experience symptoms such as vaginal dryness, headaches and irritability.
Among the many remedies women have tried over the years to manage these temporary problems, use of Black Cohosh is an acceptable method for many, especially in Germany and other parts of Europe. Eight to twelve weeks of consuming 20 mg of Black Cohosh supplement twice a day (Remifemin has been examined for quality) caused many, but not all, of the women studied to report an improvement in mild hot flashes.
However, sometimes Black Cohosh is believed to lead to hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). It may be the cause of headaches, GI issues, and weight problems. Additionally, studies have not been done to prove the safety of using Black Cohosh for more than a year. Therefore, other ways of coping with hot flashes and other menopausal difficulties should be utilized first.
